Wondering if you can still enjoy camping while on CPAP therapy? The good news is, you absolutely can! The next time you're sleeping under the stars, follow these simple tips to ensure you, and those around you, get the restful sleep you’re used to with your CPAP.
1. Use CPAP Travel Gear
Always use your CPAP, no matter where you sleep. Travel bags make it easy to bring your CPAP with you, and there are also portable travel CPAP machines designed for easy transport. A good night’s sleep will help you make the most of your camping adventure.
2. Bring a CPAP Battery
If you have an external CPAP battery, review the user guide for charging instructions. If there's no access to power outlets while camping and your machine’s manufacturer doesn't offer a battery, consider using a marine battery to power your CPAP machine. Consult your equipment provider for the best options. For ResMed users, the Pilot 24 Medistrom battery or RPSII portable battery is a great choice for S9 and AirSense 10 machines. Philips Respironics also offers a universal portable battery pack. With so many portable power options, you can easily enjoy your camping trip even off the grid.
3. Check Your Battery Before Camping
Keep in mind that humidification and pressure settings can impact your battery’s runtime. For example, the ResMed RPS II provides up to 13 hours of power, but using humidification can reduce this time. If you're unsure, visit one of our locations to ask:
- How much power your CPAP battery can provide
- Whether you can use two batteries simultaneously to extend runtime (you can with the RPS II)
- If you can skip humidification outdoors, depending on the weather
4. Change Your Filter Before and After Camping
Outdoor environments expose your CPAP filter to more dust and allergens than your bedroom. Be sure to order extra filters before your trip and replace them when you return.
